| District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) Training
A two-day basic training for District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) was organized on 20th & 21st of March in at Nagapattinam and on 29th & 30th March at Thanjavur under Integrated Program for Community Development (IPCD) in order for strengthening Indian Red Cross Society disaster response capacity at the District level.
The objectives of these trainings were to formalize a new district disaster response team and create a potential volunteer base for Nagapattinam and Thanjavur districts branches, make available trained human resources to respond to disasters within the districts, plan out the future capacity building training events for the DDRT teams to support vulnerable communities to prepare for and to respond to disasters
There were 35 identified volunteers from Nagapattinam district and 30 identified volunteers from Thanjavur district attended the training. During this training the Sub-district branches were also involved at different levels and initiatives were taken to develop better coordination among District Braches and Sub-district branches. Thiru. Ilakkuvan, Honorary Secretary, Nagapattinam District Branch and Dr. Vasantha Govindarajan, Honorary Secretary, Thanjavur District Branch inaugurated the training programs in their respective districts.

On the first day, topics like the concept of DDRT, role of volunteers in peace time as well as during emergencies, disaster management basic concepts, types and impacts, role of Red Cross in disaster, IRCS and IFRC DM tools were explained to the participants. On day-II, the participants were oriented about emergency response activities like search and rescue, offering first aid to the needy, management of dead bodies in coordination with government, water and sanitation during emergencies, temporary shelter management, relief management and Psychological support. Role of government departments during disasters and how Red Cross volunteers can play active role as an auxiliary to government were detailed to the participants, which enabled the participants to understand Red Cross role during emergencies much better. Followed that the importance of coordination with other humanitarian agencies within the district was explained. Following the feedback session certificates were distributed to the participants by the respective District Secretaries.
