District level Inter Agency Coordination Meeting at Cuddalore and Tiruvarur

Two one-day district level NGOs coordination meetings were organized in Cuddalore on 22nd June and in Tiruvarur on 23rd June 2010 under Disaster Risk Reduction. The purpose of these meetings was to bring coordination among aid agencies which are working for disaster within the district. 12 agencies including the Red Cross participated in the Cuddalore meeting while 19 agencies including the RC participated in Tiruvarur meeting. The meetings highlighted the issues and concerns related to hazards in the regions, shared the status of agencies’ preparedness level and pre-positioning of stock to cater the need if any disaster occurred. The organizations shared about their main activities, operational areas and target population. This helped the Red Cross and other agencies to know who did what, where and for whom. Further this meeting helped the participating agencies to identify potential areas to work together and note where duplication of work can be avoided.

Be Safe!: Mater Trainer’s (MT) refresher training to IPCD staff and & Training of trainers (ToT) to Health Promoters (HP)


After the pilot implementation of the Be safe! content dissemination in 2 villages, as part of the scaling up of the dissemination in remaining 27 program villages, a MT refresher training was conducted on the 24th & 25th of June 2010 in Nagapattinam district wherein 31 IPCD program staff attended the training. The main objective of the MT refresher training was to reinforce and expand on the content and learning from the original Master Trainer Training on the “Be Safe!” program conducted last year. The standard Be Safe! training strategies and participatory approach followed across all the Be Safe! implementing countries was maintained throughout the MT refresher training. The participants left the training feeling more confident as Master Trainers to further conduct and deliver the Be Safe! TOTs for the Health Promoters. Following this 14 parallel Be Safe! ToT sessions are being conducted across six IPCD districts from the 28th June to 6th July 2010 wherein 362 Red Cross Health Promoters and 13 RC crèche teachers are being trained on the Be Safe! program content. The main objectives of the ToT level of trainings are to educate the Health Promoters and RC crèche teachers to understand different forms of violence against children, understand “Be Safe!” program contents and have knowledge and skills to train adults and on the “Be Safe!” program. Its observed that the HP level response towards the program and their understanding on the various Be Safe! Topics is very high.

Leaders of Tomorrow (LoT) - IPCD School Program

 

1. Orientation cum workshop on school program for IPCD Staff:

An orientation cum workshop on school program for the project implementation team was organized from 17th -19th June 2010 at Thanjavur. The main objectives of the training were to provide clarity on school program implementation strategies, curriculum implementation plan matrix, program curriculum and school annual work plan to the staff. In all 06 District Coordinators and 08 School Program Coordinators from six IPCD target districts participated in this workshop.

 

2. Sensitization Training Program for the Head Masters

Two one-day sensitization training program were organized on 28th June and 30th June 2010 for the Head Masters of LoT target schools from Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts. 44 participants from the selected institutions participated in this workshop. The purpose of the program was to introduce and sensitize Heads of the institutions on school program activities (implementation strategies, Curriculum and annual work plan) and getting inputs from them to implement our program successfully in schools.


Health Sector-Distribution of Medical Instruments to Government Health Centers in Target Villages:

Red Cross as an ‘auxiliary to the government’ intends to work with the government and contribute in the upgradation of certain facilities in PHCs/subcenters located in and around IPCD target villages so as to further increase effectiveness of the services being catered from those centers and thus strengthen the linkages between the government and the community.

Based on the consultations with the medical officers and other key staff members from the government health centers, medical instruments such as fetal doppler, pulse oximeter, delivery table, examination table, light with stand and other items like fans, refrigerator, baby cradles and water purifiers were provided by Red Cross through IPCD program to government health centers (8 PHCs and 21 subcentres ) located in and around 03 target villages in Nagapattinam district, 02 target villages in Thanjavur district, 06 target villages in Cuddalore district and 08 target villages in Thiruvarur district where the community from the target villages avail health services. In this regard, the concerned IRCS district branches had arranged special functions in respective districts and the respective district collectors who are also the presidents of the district Red Cross distributed the above said medical instruments to the target government health centers in the presence of their Deputy Director of Health Services, Medical Officer/s and Village Health Nurses.


First Aid Refresher Training to IPCD Staff, Crèche Teachers and Health Promoters (Volunteers):

First Aid services are being provided by IPCD staff, crèche teacher/s and health promoters as per need in all the target 29 coastal villages in six districts (Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkotai) of Tamil Nadu under IPCD program since April 2008. In this connection, one day first aid refresher training was conducted from June 08th to June 12th 2010 at six different venues in six program districts. The objective of the training was to refresh and improve the knowledge and skills of IPCD staff, crèche teacher/s and health promoters with regard to first aid services and first aid techniques.


The training had covered the different topics of first aid e.g.- CPR, shock, fainting, wounds, electrical injuries, drowning, choking, burns, animal bites, eye problem and poisoning during the training session. In all 41 IPCD staff, 13 crèche teachers and 345 health promoters participated in the training.

Other regular activities

Other regular activities of the health sector – nutrition support to children from 13 Red Cross creches, health check up for the creche children, play based pre-school education; door to door health promotion by health promotes and need based first aid services continued during the month.
