| Integrated Program for Community Development (IPCD)
Integrated Programme for Community Development is a post-tsunami development programme implemented in 29 villages from Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Kanyakumari districts with the support of Canadian Red Cross.
1.Health and WatSan
Master Trainer’s Training in Water and Sanitation: As a pat of hygiene and sanitation interventions, Master’s Trainers Training in Water and Sanitation for 42 IPCD staff was conducted from 5th to 8th Jan 2011 at Manjakuppam. Tamilnadu with the objectivbe3s of enhancing the knowledge related to overall WatSan as a public health issue, developing the capacity & skills of the staff pertaining to hygiene and sanitation in their target community and understanding the WatSan issues in IPCD areas and come-up with project implementation plan. One-day field visit to solid waste management project carried out by Melpattampakkam town Panchayat and Aravind Eye Hospital was also included in the schedule.
II. Disaster Risk Reduction:
Vulnerability & Capacity Assessment: Vulnerability an d capacity assessment exercise was completed in 28 target villages and the project staff assisted the community to identify the DRR activities and report has been completed.
As part of ongoing activity, the CMG facilitators disseminated information about Government schemes among the community micro group members in their periodical meetings. Subscription was collected from household to develop community contingency fund. Further Village Disaster Management Team (VDMT) conducted their monthly meetings.
Floor Response Activities:
The trained village disaster management team members and disaster management task force members actively involved in evacuating and rescuing people from the vulnerable places and co-ordinated with government for getting immediate assistance for arranging temporary shelters and feeding people.

A flood assessment in selected worst affected villages in Cuddalore and Tiruvarur was carried out. Based on the assessment, general health camps focusing on children, elderly and pregnant women in 14 villages – 8 villages in Tiruvarur and 6 villages in Cuddalore in co-ordination with Government to prevent waterborne diseases and other health issues, provided nutritional support to children and pregnant women. Further cleaning campaign was organized in villages in Tiruvarur district involving the disaster management Task Force members and other volunteers from the community. Red Cross supported to chlorinate drinking water through village Panchayats in the same villages. Red Cross Health Promoters created awareness among the public to prevent the spread of contagious diseases during floods. Relief materials were distributed to 750 worst affected families in Tiruvarur district.
Leaders of Tomorrow – School Programme
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Facilitator Training: Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) facilitators training for select 15 JRC Counsellors from IPCD target schools and 18 IPCD staff was held from 19th – 21st January 2011 at Thanjavur. One Tamil Nadu State Branch representative also attended the training.
Distribution of Red Cross books and bags to Peer Educators:
TAge specific curriculum on Red Cross movement for school children was published. 8210 hand books on Red Cross movement were distributed to the Peer educators, JRC counselors and JRC Conveners in above primary level and all students in the primary level in the IPCD target schools. Peer sessions on Red Cross movement is being continued in all 79 target schools.
In order to motivate the peer educators (school students) and recognize their services in the school programme, 12100 backpacks were procured and distributed to them. 65 sanitary napkin vending machines and 29,050 sanitary pads were procured.
Visit by NHQ Representative:
Other regular activities – Ms. Tuhina Chatterjee (Programme Co-ordinator & Family News Services, IRCS, NHQ, New Delhi) represented the third day of training programme. The following major topics / subjects such as importance / introduction of water, water born diseases, vector born disease, water treatment & management, solid waste management , community led total sanitation, water in emergencies and review of IPCD WatSan plan were dealt by adopting structured exercise, video clippings, charges displaying, power point presentation, field exposure visit and group exercise techniques.
