| STRN Project (Supported by Spanish Red Cross)

As a part of Tsunami Rehabilitation programme in Thanjavur District, the Spanish Red Cross has come forward to support with funding of Rs.99.41 lakhs to improve the living standards of the fisher folk community by providing them with Ice boxes as working tool and Multi Purpose Net Mending sheds as basic infrastructure with the aim of enhancing their livelihood.
- His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Patron-in-Chief of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch gave away token distribution of Ice boxes (904 Ice boxes, 804 nos. with the capacity of 100 ltrs and 100 nos. with the capacity of 220 ltrs) at Raj Bhawan on July 22, 2009 followed up by completion of full distribution of ice boxes to fisherman community in the coastal areas of Thanjavur District at a cost of Rs.36,20,983/-on August 2, 2009. This will ensure their economical development by preserving the products in the ice boxes. Necessary training has been imparted to the fisher folk communities for efficient use of Ice boxes.
- Construction of Multipurpose Net Mending Sheds in Eripurakarai and S.R. Pattinam in Thanjavur District at a cost of Rs.46,70,000/- for the use of the coastal fisher folk community. The Multi Purpose Net Mending sheds will be utilized by the fisher folk community for carrying out their Net Mending activities in all the seasons, Village folks community functions, local education-cum-training centre etc.

The construction of multipurpose net mending shed in Eripurakarai commenced on January 9, 2010. The RDO, Tahsildar, Deputy Tahsildar of Pattukottai, VAO of Eripurakarai, Chairman and Honorary Secretary of Thanjavur District Indian Red Cross Society, local panchayat president and public attended the function.
The Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu State Branch, Thanjavur District Red Cross Branch and State Fisheries Department are the stakeholders of the project who are involved in designing, planning, implementation, monitoring evaluation and training which will ultimately result in capacity building of the coastal fishermen folk. About twenty thousand population of Fishermen community will be benefitted.
