Ice Box distribution supported by Spanish Red Cross .

The massive Tsunami tidal waves struck the eastern coast of South Indian States of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on December 26, 2004 had left a trial of destruction, suffering and death in the coastal districts of Cuddalore, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. To minimize the damages caused by Tsunami, efforts were taken by Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch as an auxiliary to Government.

As a part of Tsunami Rehabilitation programme in Thanjavur District, the Spanish Red Cross has come forward to support with funding of Rs.99.41 lakhs to improve the living standards of the fisher folk community by providing them with Insulated Ice boxes as working tool and Multi Purpose Net Mending sheds as basic infrastructure with the aim of enhancing their livelihood.

Accordingly, 804 Nos., of 100 liters ice boxes and 100 Nos., of 220 liters ice boxes were procured at a cost of Rs.37 Lakhs supported by Spanish Red Cross. The ice boxes were given to the beneficiaries as token distribution at Raj Bhavan by His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Patron-in-Chief of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch on 22nd July 2009. The balance of ice boxes were distributed at the respective villages of fishermen community in the presence of officials of the Thanjavur District Red Cross Branch, the concerned Red Cross Sub District Branches of Athirampattinam, Pattukottai and Peravurani, Fisheries Department and other local authorities under proper acknowledgement, and the distribution work was completed on 31st July 2009.

The construction of Net mending Multipurpose Buildings at Eripurakarai and S.R. Pattinam in Thanjavur District, will be taken up and receipt of the approval from the NHQ. The Net mending Multipurpose Buildings are constructed in order to avail space for carrying out the net mending activity of the fisher folk in all the season. These sheds will also be used for meeting of the village folks, community functions and local education-cum-training centre.
