CELEBRATION OF 89TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY, TAMIL NADU BRANCH, 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF SOLFERINO AND LAUNCHING OF REHABILITATION PROJECTS .

The 89th anniversary of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch was celebrated on 22nd July 2009 along with the 150th anniversary of battle of Solferino where Red Cross was born at Raj Bhawan , Chennai .

His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu & Patron-in-Chief of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Foundation stones were laid for construction of Net Mending & Multi Purpose buildings supported by Spanish Red Cross as post tsunami rehabilitation project for fishermen community. Along with this, the foundation stone for construction of Disaster Management Centre at Chennai was also laid. His Excellency also declared open the renovated at Red Cross-premises and modernized Prosthetic & Orthotic centre and Physiotherapy unit supported by Italian Red Cross at a cost of Rs.45 Lakhs. 904 Iceboxes intended for distribution to the fishermen community in Thanjavur district at a cost of Rs.40 Lakhs for which token distribution was made by His Excellency to two beneficiaries.

In connection with 150th anniversary of Solferino battle, a book entitled “Our World Your Move” was released on the occasion and the first copy was received by Dr.S.Ilango, DPH.

The Partner National Societies, Canadian Red Cross, Spanish Red Cross, Italian Red Cross and International Committee of Red Cross were honoured by His Excellency for their support in various programmes undertaken by the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch.

Dr. Vimala Ramalingam, President of the Tamil Nadu Branch presided over the function. Thiru M.S. Shanmugam, I.A.S., Collector, Thanjavur and Ex-officio President of Thanjavur District Red Cross Branch felicitated the occasion. At the outset, Dr. P. Sivarajah, Chairman & Vice-President welcomed the gathering and Thiru S. Silambanan, Vice-President proposed vote of thanks.

His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu appreciated the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch for the commendable services rendered by the Junior Red Cross and Youth Red Cross volunteers.

Patrons, Vice-Patrons, District and Sub-District Secretaries of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch from all over Tamil Nadu, Junior Red Cross, Youth Red Cross members, Government officials and volunteers participated in the function.

The programme came to an end with the traditional thanks giving claps by the Junior Red Cross students.
