OUTCOME
Most of the questions raised by the participants were about discipline of a child. The facilitators cleared them that discipline a child is very important and at the same time it should not injure the child. After discussion participants suggested the following ways to discipline a child
Do NOT hit children
Discipline when calm
Separate yourself until calm
Talk through problems – use positive language
Set boundaries
Model safe behaviour.
Participants wanted to know how children can protect themselves. Facilitators detailed them that children can be taught their rights and ways to be safe in their homes and communities. They can also use the following personal safety rules;
Say No
Get away
Tell someone they trust – keep telling until someone helps.
Participants shared some child abuse cases happened in their respective areas. According to them most sexual abuse by someone a child knows well and trusts. It was also discussed to teach children about their rights and that they deserve to be safe and also unsafe touches are never their fault.
The participants suggested that it is very important to sensitize the parents also about the rights of children, needs to protect them from intentional and unintentional harm and from vulnerability. Despite the fact that violence has always been present...Violence can be prevented.
Children who have been abused often feel many confusing emotions and may find hard to tell anyone, even parents. Since the strategy of this programme is to integrate child protection components to already existing youth peer education programme, children will feel free to share their problems with their peer groups.
Participants commented that the project will help to make an impact on youth on the issue and will equip them with information, skill and tools to project themselves though prevention education. They assured support and cooperation for implementing Child Protection Programme in their institutions.
