Short Term Recovery Needs (STRN) Project

As a part of Tsunami Rehabilitation programme in Thanjavur District, the Society has taken up the clause of improving the living standards of the fisher folk community in Thanjavur District by providing them with Ice boxes as working tool and Multi Purpose Net Mending sheds as basic infrastructure with the aim of enhancing their livelihood supported by Spanish Red Cross.

Plastering, flooring and electrical works are in progress for the construction of Multi Purpose Net Mending Shed in Eripurakkarai and it is expected to finish the construction by the second week of May2010. These sheds will be utilized by the fisher folk community for carrying out their Net Mending activities in all the seasons, Village folk community functions, local education-cum-training centre etc.

The Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu State Branch, Thanjavur District Red Cross Branch and State Fisheries Department are the stakeholders of the project who are involved in designing, planning, implementation, monitoring evaluation and training which will ultimately result in capacity building of the coastal fishermen folk. About twenty thousand population of Fishermen community will be benefitted by this project.
