District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) Trainings .

 

As a part of strengthening disaster preparedness and response capacity of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch, a three day District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) training programs were organized in Tiruchirapalli (8,9,10 October 2009), Tirunelveli (9,10,11 October 2009), Tuticorin (13,14,15 October 2009) and Villupuram (13,14,15 October 2009) districts with the support of IRCS National Headquarters and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).


Objectives of the Tranining

The main objectives of this Training programs are to strengthen disaster Management capacity of IRCS Tamil Nadu State branch, to create a pool of trained personnel for effective emergency preparedness and response, to expand the disaster management programme to districts by forming DDRT and to develop a pool of trained volunteers to support vulnerable communities to prepare for and to respond during disasters.

Participants Selection

165 Committed volunteers from Red Cross District Branches who have previous experience in DM were selected as DDRT members and trained in different aspects of Disaster Management. During this training the local NGOs working at districts in DM / community development were also involved.

Practical training was offered to the participants with the help of Tamilnadu Fire and Rescue Department.

 

 

Training Components

The training components were designed as per the guidelines given by IRCS, National Headquarters to develop both knowledge and skills of the participants. The participants were given thorough information on Red Cross principles, code of conduct, duties and responsibilities in preparedness and response, community mobilization, water and sanitation in emergencies, information and communication, relief management, emergency assessment and strategies to improve inter agency coordination with other NGOs at district level.


The participants were also trained in offering psychological first aid and managing stressful situation while working in emergencies. Field visits were organized and the participants were taken to nearby disaster prone communities in their respective districts for getting more exposure and practical trainings.

 

Thee DDRT training program was conducted from 7th to 9th October 2009 in  Tiruchirapalli district. The District Collector Thiru. Soundaiya. I.A.S., inaugurated the program. The district Secretary, JRC Conveners and YRC Program Officers participated in the training program.  Mr. C. Anbarasu, DM Coordinator facilitated the training.
