Disaster Management Program - Training in Sathyabama University .

Remote sensing and Geographical information system on Disaster Management training was held from 7th - 9th March 2011 at Sathyabama University, Chennai. The main objectives of the training were to introduce Geo Informatics Systems (GIS) application tools in disaster management and orient about uses of Remote Sensing tools in various disasters. 40 participants from various government departments such as Revenue, Metro water, Metrological, Fire & Rescue service, ICMR, UNDP and Indian Red Cross staffs also participated in the training. The following topics were dealt in the three days training; GIS & Remote sensing concepts, GIS support of disaster management in urban areas and uses of global positioning system equipments in disaster management. Dr. Tune Usha, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai, Dr.Narayanakumar, National Institute for ocean management, Anna University Chennai, Dr.R..Krishnamoorthy, Madras University were the main facilitators of this three days training. The participant’s knowledge / skills was enhanced thorough this training.

Workshop on SPHERE standard.

Inter Agency Group (IAG) TamilNadu was conducted the 3 days Sphere standard workshop in ICSA Egmore , Chennai on 15th to 17th March 2011.The participants were from INGO’s and NGO’s in TamilNadu. The main objectives of the workshop were

• To describe why Sphere Standards is important
• To give orientation on Sphere Standards Handbook
• To describe the importance of Humanitarian Charter and Code of Conduct
• To describe the step in Sphere & Project Cycle
• To enable contextual understanding in the steps of Sphere & Project Cycle
• To demonstrate how to use sphere handbook to analyze humanitarian context effectively

             The following topics were dealt in the three days workshop; Sphere and humanitarian charter, introduction to sphere and project cycle, sphere and assessment, sphere and analysis, sphere and programme planning, sphere and implementation, monitoring and Evaluation. Mr. Joseph Sahayam CASA, Chennai and Mr.Samuel World Vision, Chennai was the main facilitators of three days workshop.
