Disaster Management volunteers training program was organized in Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College For Women, Teynampet, Chennai on 01.08.2011
About 120 YRC students participated in the training and got information on Red Cross Movement and Principles, Disaster Management, Code of conduct, relief management, impact of disaster, Roles and Responsibilities of Volunteers and their rights.
AIM of Disaster Management trainings.
- The aim of the disaster management training is to build the capacity of Red Cross volunteers; to improve preparedness, risk reduction, relief management, coordination of disaster response at all levels before during and after disasters.
- Quality and availability of disaster management tools - Disaster management information system and trained youth volunteers.
Inter Agency group meeting.
The meeting of IAG Tamil Nadu was held in the premises of Indian Red Cross Society, Chennai on 2nd August 2011. The meeting started at 2.30 pm. Mr. Radhakrishnan, Secretary; IRCS – Tamil Nadu gave the welcome address which was followed by the introduction of the members. The members introduced themselves. Ms. Saulina of TNVHA briefed on the Agenda for finalizing the same.
1. The progress of IAG
Mr. Joseph Sahayam the facilitator of IAG Tamil Nadu briefed on the progress of IAG in Tamil Nadu. He mentioned that, post Tsunami Interventions, there was a growing need for coordination among NGOs as many INGOs began to withdraw. Sphere India workshop on Quality and Accountability which followed the joint assessment strengthened the idea of coordination.
2. Finalizing the charter of IAG – Tamil Nadu
The Charter which was circulated was discussed among the members. There were good discussions emerging and this brought in more clarity from among the members.

- Capacity building

- NGO coordination at District level
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Meenakchinathan, IRCS. IRCS hosted the meeting
Disaster Management Induction Training
Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch conducted a certificate progamme ‘Disaster Management Induction Training’ at Ethiraj College for women. Duration of the programme was 30 hours and it was organized by the NSS team of the college. Following topics were covered in the training programme. History of Red Cross, Red Cross Movement Emblem and Principles, Disaster Management concepts, Types of disasters, Impact of a disaster ,Disaster Management cycle, Emergency Assessment, Relief Management, Role of Volunteers in DM, Tracing during Disaster, First Aid, Water and Sanitation , Shelter Management, Security during emergency , Safety Audit and learning from past disasters. Thirty five students from NSS and YRC attended the training program and actively participated in the events. The methodology adopted for the progamme included Power point presentations, Group Discussion, Group presentations and practical sessions.
DM Red Cross Volunteers training programme at Krishnagiri
IRCS Krishnagiri branch conducted a one day DM Red Cross volunteers training programme on 26th august 2011, with the support of IRCS NHQ and IFRC. About 35 volunteers attended the pogramme. The sessions facilitated included RC movements, DM concepts, types, Impacts, DM cycle, role of Red Cross in DM, Emergency Assessment, role of volunteers in DM and disaster preparedness.
DDRT Refresher training at Villupuram
IRCS and IFRC supported the DDRT Refresher Training programme at IRCS Villupuram Branch on 29.08.2011.It was a one day training programme. The sessions were RC movements, DM impacts, and role of Red Cross in DM, Emergency Assessment, Reporting, Responsibilities of DDRT teams and District preparedness. Thirty five DDRT members attended the programe.
